The sacrifices that were made to birth freedom into this Nation were many and should not be forgotten.  Since the very beginning of our existence as a Nation, we have strived to be free from tyranny.  Tyranny was the name to describe cruel and oppressive government rule.  The leaders of the 13 colonies put their families and livelihoods on the line to announce to the Queen of England that we will no longer tolerate your rule.

Today, we do not understand what that means, nor what it felt like to do this.  The responsibility that they took upon themselves to speak and to lead this Nation into its next period of growth.  Five of the signers were captured by the British as traitors.  They were tortured to death.  12 had their homes ransacked and burned.  2 had their sons killed in the Revolutionary War, and 2 had their sons captured.  England just didn’t say, “OK we accept your right to separate from us.”  They had to fight.

There was blood spilled on the battlefield and lives were lost because of the bold stand that was made by these men.  We don’t appreciate it because we don’t understand what they lost.  The price that was paid for the formation of America was great.  There were many people who stood to secure that right for you and me.  There was loss untold by these men and their families.  They sowed blood for us to have to the right to be free from tyranny.

What did we do with the sacrifice that was made?  For some there is no appreciation of that cost and because of this they feel free to spit on the graves of these people.  They feel free to scorn the ideology of people living together as one, free to live and to choose to co-exist with one another.  How do you think God feels about what we are doing to the Nation that He gave us?  What would God say to us?

Today we have people in this Nation who don’t understand what was given to us.  They not knowing the price that was paid are choosing to go back into the bondage of cruel and oppressive government.  It would be a terrible shame for us to turn our backs and what was given to make us free.  We need to pray that the eyes of the people become open to truth of what really happened.  We need to pray that God forgives us for dishonoring those who gave so much for us.  This is why the very fabric of our Nation has been torn.  There is no recognition of what was done in the past.

18 Then I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.  [Ecclesiastes 2:  18 – 19 (NKJV)]

Solomon said it best.  We have been left a great inheritance.  Will we appreciate it?  Will see it for what is?  The Sacrifices of Independence Day were meant to be cherished forever.  This is the foundation that we were built upon.
