I want to give you something this week that takes four seconds. I’ve been using it for years and, I’ll be honest with you, I still don’t always like it. It’s ruined a lot of perfectly good grudges.

Here it is: Jesus, how do YOU see this?

That’s the whole thing. No technique, no journal, no worksheet.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” —Matthew 6:22

The Greek word translated healthy there is haplous, a word that can carry the sense of single, simple, or undivided. There’s something in that picture I love: the condition of the eye affects everything we see.

Which is inconvenient, because it means the problem is frequently me.

I see somebody who’s being difficult. Jesus may see somebody who’s in pain and doesn’t have the words for it.

I see a woman who didn’t return my call. Jesus may see a woman who’s got something going on I know nothing about.

Same person. Same afternoon. Two completely different perspectives.

Think about Martha in that kitchen. She saw a sister who wasn’t pulling her weight, and honestly? She wasn’t wrong. Somebody had to cook. Jesus was looking at the same room and saw a woman who’d chosen the one thing that mattered.

Martha didn’t need a better attitude. She needed different eyes.

Here’s where most of us blow it: we ask the question…and then keep right on talking. We tell Him how we see it. At length. With supporting evidence.

Asking takes four seconds. Being quiet long enough to get an answer takes about sixty. That’s the part we often miss.

So this week, pick the person who irritated you most. You already know who it is. You didn’t have to think about it.

Ask Him: Jesus, how do YOU see this?

Then be quiet for one minute. Time it if you have to. You may not get anything the first time. Ask again tomorrow.  Our job is to look. His job is to help us see.
